Alright buddies, finally I’m back. And as you can see, I am still alive and kicking (cough, cough) so there was nothing to worry about. Today I’m gonna show you how to boost your both internal (better rankings) & external (advertisers, Top Commentators, and links you use within blog entries). This could be the last time when I focus on this issue unless some Web 2.0 service get on my nerves and start to use this parameter in some unacceptable way OR Google includes some dramatical changes in the search engine.
An appropriate quote from SEOmoz:
The nofollow attribute is just a mechanism that gives webmasters the ability to modify PageRank flow at link-level granularity. (…) There’s no stigma to using nofollow, even on your own internal links; for Google, nofollow’ed links are dropped out of our link graph; we don’t even use such links for discovery.
How to use nofollow (”I’m gonna play the wise SEO” option)
To all intents and purposes in every practical sense - feel free to use nofollow for all links you don’t want to receive link juice. But the real question is - how to figure out which of links filled in your pages are really worth it? Opinions are different - personally I prefer nofollow for all things listed below:
- additional navigation (add a comment, skip to #anchor, doubled links)
- sites filled with content unrelated to mine (also I don’t link to bad neighborhoods)
- all links to RSS feeds (is there any good reason to drive the link juice to your Feedburner feed?)
- affiliate stuff (cannot see any good reason as well)
- comments (I’ve already described why only ill-considered people & comment whores use dofollow)
- all asshats I dislike (this one is obvious, isn’t it?)
- websites that use nofollow for all external URLs (for instance - Wikipedia)
- social bookmarking submissions (RSS chiklets, too)
Note about “nofollow” on popular Web 2.0 sites
There are only two major social bookmarking services that share the link love with users. First one is Digg that doesn’t use nofollow in general, the second one is Reddit (this time they are even better than Digg - only new, untrusted users receive nofollow, I think I want to see the same in Wikipedia!). The rest (Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Netscape, YouTube) are goddamn SEO asshats, do not share your link juice with them!*
* - They already got enough good links to rock the web, I know, I know. Adding nofollow to all these URLs just makes me feel better ![]()
