Today I wasted 2 hours on looking for a domain name for one another web service. There were only 3 requirements: shortness, .com extension & possible relation to the main topic. Final result does have 14 characters and I would like to say single “thanks” to Sedo, NameDrive, Parked and all other companies that make millions of dollars every year on goddamn spam domain parking.
Quote from Domain Name Wire:
VeriSign has released its quarterly report on domain names and says there are now 138M registered domains across all top level domains (TLDs) — that’s 31% more than this time last year. (…) VeriSign estimates that 10% of new domain names registered are purchased with the sole intent of being monetized through domain parking. 23% of domain names are currently parked, although VeriSign defines “parked” as having only one page. Many advanced parked sites have multiple pages and may not be included in that total.

Sorry to hear you could not get your domain, but I am not sure if the names to blame are the parking companies. Actually domainers have invested in domain names much before these parking companies came online. At least, now you know where you can make an offer for your desired domain name.

If domain parking were disallowed we’d have spam blogs and rubbish pages on all those domains. Better to have clearly marked parked pages.
I have xendx.com. Make me a good offer.

doesn’t fly but very popular though.

Astrit: You can get this info from WHOIS record as well, don’t you? Do you remember that ICANN does make 20 cents per every single domain name registration & renewing? These fees apply to .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .name, .jobs, and .mobi
Marc: If domain parking were restricted by law IMO current status of Web would be much better. Some opportunity to report “spam blogs and rubbish pages” straight to ICANN could be also a great idea.

AJ: Orly Owl may be even less popular, don’t you think? Check this out

A good portal for buying domains is SnapNames. You can pick up 3 letter domains every now and again. They provide downloadable lists, so if you want to read though about 100,000 names or are a programmer and can get your computer to do it for your
you can narrow down your search.

David: Nice, I haven’t seen it before. Thanks a bunch, it might be quite useful!

That’s not the point. You still won’t get the domains you want. There’ll just be rubbish instead of parked pages.

I still do think it was in DRAMATICAL need of harder restrictions. Currently there’s no way to fix it, so let’s say discussing about policy of ICANN would be only a froth, right?

Domain parking is a nightmare when done badly (spammy). If it was kept professional and presented an easy to understand auction/bid process then I wouldn’t mind.
