Habari is already here

Maybe you don’t know, but after a few months of work on Habari, an entirely new blog engine had been released. You can say that it is a cheap news, because at the moment we already have mighty Wordpress, and at least 15 other (worse) blog tools or more, but it’s not all the way, in fact. Why? Just because Habari seems to be a budding one, in many people opinion.

The name comes from some Swahili word that means ‘what’s the news?‘, so you can expect a gust of fresh air in market that’s already here. As you can read on Blogging Pro, Habari will be using more current technologies like object oriented programming techniques, (yeah, that means PHP5), and some slick interface interactions thanks to AJAX from the prototype library.

As I write above, that is a budding one. If you don’t know why, you will find an answer on second paragraph of that post. We already have our Wordpress installations, and right now we don’t need any new software. But we will need it, maybe sooner than we think. Do you disagree? So let’s look on phpBB example. There was a time when it was a great forum script. But what it is now? An outdated, inefficient and sluggish script with 10 thousands of ugly templates support. If developers want to fix it, they will have to shape up all the outdated code, and add some new functionality. Yep, if they write entirely new software, they will achieve desired effect much sooner ;)

Anyway, Habari 0.1 Developer Release was finally released. As you can read on official project homepage, this version doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, but it is a fully functioning version of their codebase. I’ve downloaded it, I’ve watched it in action, I’ve made a few screenshots that you can check below, and finally I’m going to show my comments…

  • Installation is very fast, and simple. Simpler than Wordpress.
  • Spirit of simplicity definitely kicks ass. Deep inside I hope that Habari will not lose it during the growing.
  • K2 is a default blog theme. If developers want to overrun Wordpress, they have to find out how to do something with Habari’s look like. Otherwise we will have a problem with recognizing Habari ones from all that Wordpress crowd. Maybe it could be difficult to attain, but not impossible.
  • Habari has support for plugins, similarly to Wordpress. But I hope that users won’t have to install bunch of plugins, as opposed. Wider its own functionality and support for widgets will be a better way of growth than a batch of standalone plugins that you have to install and upgrade regularly.
  • Keep a close eye on Habari Developers Blog. They don’t even have a logotype, maybe this one may be a good suggestion? ;)
